The Sakura Nursing Forum 2027 features keynote contributions from internationally recognised scholars whose work reflects significant impact in nursing practice, education, and healthcare systems.
These keynote addresses are intended to provide critical perspectives on emerging developments, inform academic discussion, and frame the thematic direction of the Forum.
Professor Lorna Kwai Ping SUEN

Professor Lorna Kwai Ping Suen is Dean and Professor of the School of Nursing at Tung Wah College, Hong Kong. A registered nurse and registered midwife, she has more than 28 years of experience in nursing education. She has held academic appointments at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
Her research focuses on complementary and alternative therapies, particularly auricular therapy and diagnosis, infection control, and interventions for community-dwelling older adults. She has contributed extensively to nursing research, education, and professional development through her scholarly work, consultancy activities, and international collaborations.
Professor Suen has delivered keynote and plenary lectures at universities and academic conferences worldwide and served as Convener of the East Asian Nursing Scholars Forum, a seven-nation initiative dedicated to advancing doctoral nursing education.
She has authored more than 190 peer-reviewed publications, 10 book chapters, and over 120 conference abstracts and serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. Professor Suen is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing (FHKAN) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN). In recognition of her contributions to nursing research, she was inducted into the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame and has been recognised among Stanford University’s Top 2% Scientists worldwide for multiple consecutive years.

Professor Misuzu Nakamura (PhD in Nursing, Registered Nurse) serves as Professor and Dean of the School of Nursing and the Graduate School of Nursing at Kameda Medical University. She has dedicated approximately 30 years to nursing education, focusing particularly on the training of Advanced Practice Nurses (CNS and NP), and is currently involved in DNP (Doctor of Nursing Practice) education.
Her research focuses on acute and critical care nursing, particularly the development of nursing practice models that promote patient recovery. Her scholarly interests also include surrogate decision-making for patients and families requiring emergency care, postoperative functional impairment and life support, the educational needs of nurses working in rural and remote healthcare settings, and simulation-based learning to promote independent professional development.
Through her continued contributions to nursing research, education, and clinical practice, Professor Nakamura remains dedicated to advancing nursing care that supports patient recovery and quality, patient-centred outcomes.

Dr Lorna Moxham is the recipient of international and national awards related to her work. She is currently Professor of Mental Health Nursing and was the Global Challenges Program challenge leader for Living Well, Longer from 2013 – Jan 2021. Lorna has been a nurse for 46 years, 44 of which she has specialized in mental health. She has clinical, academic and governance experience and research expertise in nursing education, particularly work integrated learning, mental health and mental illness and qualitative research methodologies. She has published more than 200 papers, chapters and text books and has a strong track record for supervising higher degree students to successful on-time completion.
Lorna is passionate about mental health, and is the co-founder of Recovery Camp, an evidence based award winning psychosocial intervention and educational program. Recovery Camp provides a research based work integrated learning experience for future health professionals and a trauma informed person centred recovery-oriented program for people living with mental illness. The aim of Recovery Camp’s research outputs is to enrich student learning experiences, whilst providing meaningful outcomes for people who are living with mental health issues.
In 2024 Lorna was the recipient of the Australian College of Nursing – National Trailblazer Award for her work with the Recovery Camp program.
Professor Hsiu-Ju Chang

Hsiu-Ju Chang, PhD, is a Professor and former Dean of the College of Nursing at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan. She previously served as Chair of the School of Nursing and Dean of Student Affairs at Taipei Medical University, and as Director of the Efficient Smart Care Research Center at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Dr. Chang received her PhD from Case Western Reserve University, USA, and her master’s degree from National Taiwan University. Her research focuses on youth mental health, depression and suicide prevention, research instrument development, psychosocial interventions for adolescents, and digital mental health approaches for adolescent populations.
Professor Fei-Hsiu Hsiao

With a clinical background in psycho-oncology and mental health nursing, my work centers on supporting patients with major depressive disorder, adjustment disorder with depressed mood, and breast and lung cancer survivors. Recognizing the importance of culturally responsive care, I have developed culturally sensitive body–mind–spirit interventions integrated with mindfulness and compassion-based psychotherapy. To prepare clinical nurses to deliver these therapeutic approaches, it is essential that they first cultivate their own self-care practices, particularly in strengthening emotional regulation. Therefore, I have developed and tested a mindfulness self-compassion program designed to enhance nurses’ inner well-being. This program not only supports their personal resilience but also enables them to apply these skills in caring for colleagues and clients.
Professor Patricia M. Burrell

Dr. Burrell’s BSN is from Northeastern University; MSN’ from University of Hawaii at Manoa; PhD from the University of Utah and 1st Post-Doc from the C. G. Jung Institute-Zurich. She is a Professor of Nursing and is also Director of the Transcultural Nursing Center- HPU. She’s also a Transcultural Nursing Scholar.
